How To Get Your First 500 Followers On Instagram

Instagram has changed. Gone are the days where you take a photo straight from your iPhone, slap on a Valencia filter, put one or two hashtags and call it a day. Instagram has evolved into a powerhouse especially for bloggers and influencers! I have had Instagram for 5 years now so I have seen many changes in the app. However, it wasn’t until 5 months ago I decided to create a separate Instagram for my blog and grow it. I have amassed a lot of amazing followers so I would like to share how to get followers on instagram!

A lot of the strategies that bloggers tout as the best strategies honestly do not work. Hashtagging brings almost no returns now. It is also a complete waste of time spending hours on your phone liking and commenting on people’s photos in the hopes that someone will follow you.

I needed to find a method that worked so I read lots of blogs on how to get followers on Instagram. My main criteria was that the method should be cheap and show a noticeable growth in followers without spending hours on Instagram.  After a few tweakings and experiments, I found it!

I didn’t use any follow bots/automatic liking systems because I don’t have the money and I wanted a more organic growth. Growing your Instagram this way is definitely slower than using bots but I’ve found that the audience you build will be more engaged. Also, as your following increases, the amount of followers you gain increase exponentially so patience is the name of the game!

Post (Semi) Often

I’m guilty of not posting often because I don’t have the time to take pictures for the week and schedule them. Whoever does this is a true champion! How do you do it?!??!

Posting frequently on Instagram is a no – brainer. It’s always the key to growing any social media account. Post frequent, high quality posts. The more often you post, the more exposure you get and a greater chance of more people seeing your Instagram and following you! Most experts say posting once a day is optimum for growing your account.

But it’s not absolutely necessary. I only post once or twice a week and I get followers everyday. Do what frequency is best for you and makes you comfortable. Just be consistent. Consistency is key.

Do A Follow Train

This is the most important thing that has made my instagram grow these past 5 months. I do a follow spree 5-6 times a week and I have seen a lot of growth from this method. Here is how I do it

At peak hour, (which is 7-10 pm for my time zone) I click on the latest posts from a user I follow and see who liked it. Once I’m there I visit the pages of whoever liked their picture. I like the users pictures and then follow them. I usually follow 10-15 people on these days. They will usually follow you back. I have a 70% success rate using this method. This method is absolutely necessary for me.

One thing to consider is a users follower to following ratio. If a user has a massive gap between followers/following, do not expect a follow back. It also helps to follow people who are interested in the same things as you are. So I usually follow a lot of bloggers and females age 18-30 because I know they fit my demographic of who I am trying to reach!

Instagram Pods

Instagram pods are completely optional but they do help somewhat in engagement on photos. An Instagram pod is a group of bloggers on an Instagram group chat (usually 15) who comment and like on every post anyone shares in the group. There’s no limit on the amount of instagram pods you can join, but one pod is a lot to keep up with!

It’s nice to have a group of bloggers that will always like your pictures and comment. I also ask for blogging advice and general chit-chat from time to time on the group chat so it’s a nice community to be in. However it’s not necessary, Instagram pods are so new and you can grow your account without one.

Follow a theme

how to get followers on instagram

Once someone visits your page for the first time, the overall impression that they get is what will make them decide to click the follow button. Themed Instagram can help drive people to click the follow button. I love having a themed Instagram, but it’s not always the easiest thing for me to achieve.

My theme is currently (to the best of my knowledge) lots of white space with a pop of neutral colors. I don’t overthink my theme and frankly I don’t care. As long as my pictures look decent I’m posting it.

You can tweak and try different themes to see what gets the most likes and comments. If a streamlined theme works for you, do it. It’s also good to have a theme when you are branding yourself on social media because you can be easily recognized by your style of photos. It’s all dependent on what you personally want!

Once you implement these tips, you will see an organic growth of your Instagram with highly engaged followers. I hope you got some amazing tips on how to get followers on Instagram!

Instagram is fun, but my new favourite social media is definitely Pinterest because I get lots of traffic from there. I wrote an extended post on how to get started using Pinterest and drive traffic to your blog. Do check it out!

Travel Diary: Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Florida

Two days before the monster Hurricane Irma was set to make landfall in Florida, I decided to go to Disney’s Animal Kingdom! I have been going to Disney World every year for the past 14 years so I am very familiar with most rides in all the theme parks.

I didn’t want to miss going here because it was my birthday and I wanted to celebrate it  for once! I’m really glad I did but now I’m currently cooped up at home recovering from the hurricane writing this post. It’s been a journey!

Disney World is arguably the most popular theme park in the world. There are many parks that have different themes that stay true to their names. There is Magic Kingdom, which is dedicated to fairy tales and Disney princesses. Epcot, which is dedicated to technology and futurism and Animal Kingdom, which is dedicated to nature and it’s animals!

Disney’s Animal Kingdom

I visited the theme park with my family and it was a really sunny when we arrived in the parking lot. There were many cars parked already and we walked forward to a series of poles to wait for a tram to pick us up!

Disney'sAnimalKingdomDisney'sAnimalKingdom

It takes about 3 minutes to reach the ticketing booths so it’s a really short ride!

You can buy Disney World tickets in person or online. I bought my tickets online so I didn’t need to wait in line to get tickets. I simply walked to the booth in front and scanned my bar code on my phone to get in!

Disney'sAnimalKingdomDisney'sAnimalKingdom

Once you’re inside the park you immediately feel as if you are in an Amazonian forest. There is a lush display of evergreen trees everywhere and beautiful flowers scattered around. It really gives you the feel of the Jungle!

Disney'sAnimalKingdom

The park is divided into roughly 4-6 sections but I only remember 4! There is Africa, Asia, Dinoland and Pandora.

Pandora: The World Of Avatar

Pandora is Disney’s new attraction that recently opened in Animal Kingdom. It reportedly cost half a billion dollars to construct! I’m a big avatar fan so there is no way I was going to miss seeing this attraction!

Pandora is absolutely breathtaking! It blows my mind just thinking about all the hours that went into the construction of the scenery. The surrounding area looks like it came straight out of the Avatar movie! Those strangely shaped rocks and filled with green leaves and spinning thingies? They’re all there and look so real. It was so great to be immersed into the environment.

Disney'sAnimalKingdom

I also saw the machines that the humans used in the Avatar movie. I loved how they made it life-sized. You could just tell that a lot of effort was put into the design and construction of these structures!

Disney'sAnimalKingdom

The Na’vi River Journey

Up next was one of my most anticipated rides; the Na’vi River Journey! The Na’vi river journey is a boat ride through a bioluminescent rain forest in search for the Shaman Of Songs. It was a really dark ride so it was difficult to get some good shots! But there is a giant life-sized singing avatar robot (the shaman), 3D animations and lots of sensations that make you feel like you’re really in the Na’Vi River! It’s definitely a ride that you should not miss if you go to Pandora!

Disney'sAnimalKingdomDisney'sAnimalKingdom

Standing in the long lines had me beat so I decided to get some delicious bubble tea called “Night Blossom” at a stall nearby. This was my first time getting bubble tea and I was pleasantly surprised!

Disney'sAnimalKingdomDisney'sAnimalKingdom

The lines in Animal Kingdom are also ridiculously long so make sure you have some sunscreen, comfortable shoes and a bottle of water. I stood for 1 hour to enter the Na’vi river and the ride only lasted for 5 minutes. The two other Pandora rides had 120 minute long lines! Long lines are just something you have to prepare for in Disney because there is always a crowd present.

Disney'sAnimalKingdom

Africa: The Festival Of The Lion King

Up next was the walk to the Festival of the Lion King all the way in Africa! This was a broadway show with Simba and his friends filled with elaborate props, acrobatics and special effects.

Disney'sAnimalKingdom

Disney'sanimalkingdom

I love broadway shows and musicals so this was something I was really looking forward to! I was pleasantly surprised because I taught it was just a simple singing show. It is so much more than that! It was also a full 30 minute show so I was happy that it wasn’t as short as most Disney attractions/rides.

Disney'sAnimalKingdomDisney'sAnimalKingdom

Off To Dinoland….

Dinoland is dedicated to Dinosaurs and the main attractions are really the rollercoasters there! I wanted to go on some of the rollercoasters there but my sister was afraid and riding alone in a rollercoaster isn’t fun to me. We skipped on that and rode a little cute baby dinosaur on the Dino-Rama ride!

Disney'sAnimalKingdomDisney'sAnimalKingdomDisney'sAnimalKingdomDisney'sAnimalKingdom

Entertainment Around The Park

I loved how there was lots of entertainment around the park that didn’t require you to stand in long lines. There was a drumming quartet in Pandora, a harp player near Dinoland and acrobatic dancers in Africa.

Disney'sAnimalKingdomDisney'sAnimalKingdomDisney's-Animal-Kingdom

I think I had a really good birthday celebration at Animal Kingdom! I usually don’t celebrate my birthdays because I just can’t be bothered. good experience that I won’t forget! Thank you so much for reading.

Have you ever been to Disney?

How To Create The Perfect Pinterest Profile And Drive Traffic To Your Blog

I had an overwhelming amount of requests on my last post for tips on how to get started with Pinterest and use it to drive traffic to your blog. When I first started blogging, Pinterest was an app that was not on my radar at all. I actually thought Pinterest was just a personal scrapbook where you save random stuff like recipes and wedding ideas. Pinterest is actually those things, but it’s so much more!

I didn’t realise that Pinterest could be a great source of traffic till I stumbled across it on an article that talked about ways you could drive traffic to your blog. I was intrigued, but I was shocked when I found out that 90% of some bloggers traffic came from Pinterest.

I wanted to know more so I read many articles which were mostly confusing, but I slowly began to get it and now my Pinterest game is improving! I’m shocked at how Pinterest brings a steady amount of traffic to my blog. I can’t say the same about my other social media accounts which only peak whenever I post something new and I don’t have the time to post daily.

Before I begin, I am by no means a Pinterest expert. I think I’m the last person that should be giving advice on Pinterest but since a lot of people really want to know how to use Pinterest from my perspective, I am happy to make this post!

My traffic from Pinterest is also pitiful compared to other bloggers and I am still figuring it out. I only started using Pinterest last month after half-assing it for 3 months! The improvement is amazing and thats why I’m beginning to really like Pinterest. So as I go along, I will continue to share what I have learned from Pinterest to you!

So What Is Pinterest Anyway?

Pinterest is a social media/ bookmarking site that allows you to share, search and “pin” any interesting image you find on the internet. You can organise your interests in board, re-pin other people’s photos and follow them. Pinterest is filled with photographs, recipes, informatics and many more stuff. Which is why it is perfect for bloggers.

How Does The Algorithm Work?

The reason why I like Pinterest in particular is because your feed is highly tailored to your interests. If you have ever used Pinterest, you would notice that when you search for something (like chicken nuggets) and go back to you home page, similar photos of what you searched for will begin to pop up on your feed.

This good as a blogger because your stuff can pop up on someones homepage without you having thousands of followers or re-pins. However, I recently learnt that Pinterest favours accounts that pin often. So I strive to pin 5-10 things each day.

Creating Your Pinterest Profile

Your profile is really important in Pinterest and it’s important for it to be visually pleasing and easy to read/navigate. With a good profile, you will appear higher in search results and allow readers to visit your blog! Here are some of the things our Pinterest profile needs:

  1. A business account.
  2. An easy to read bio that explains what your blog is about.
  3. A profile picture
  4. An explanatory username
  5. Seven to twenty boards related to your blogging topic.

First of all, you need to create a business account. Which you can easily do here. Having a business account gives you access to Pinterest analytics and ads. Which is invaluable for a blogger. Just like viewing your blogging stats, it’s also good to view your Pinterest stats to see what Pins were popular, insights into your followers and average daily impressions! Here’s a snapshot of my recent stats!

Screen Shot 2017-08-20 at 10.18.56 AM

Quick Tip: You also need to confirm your website is yours on Pinterest! Here’s a guide to help you achieve that.

Now, on to my Pinterest profile. I currently have 16 boards consisting of things I enjoy but are somewhat related to my niche. I add a new board every 2 weeks. Theres a lot of makeup, hair, beauty and photography pictures/tips.

It is important to pin within your niche because the if people that follow you are interested in your pins, they will probably click and visit your blog!

Your bio also needs to convey what your blog is about in a few words. Be direct and straight to the point. There’s usually no need to beat around the bush in the bio section. The perfect bio should ideally explain what you do and there should be a link to your website so people can visit it straight from your profile!

Screen Shot 2017-08-17 at 11.11.48 AM

It may be helpful to have a username that contains a tagline of what your blog is about. This is to make it easier for people visiting your blog and pinning your posts to know what type of blogger you are.

Finally, a profile picture. Duh! You don’t need to think too much about this one because I didn’t. Just make sure you have a profile picture there! You could use a clear selfie of your face and you’re good to go!

Pinterest Boards

Once you’re done with your bio, you can usually start searching for photos and pinning right away! Search for things relevant to your niche that can be organised in a board. Once you see something you like, click the pin button and create a board for it to be located it. It’s that simple!

Here are some things a board needs:

  1. A strong description (Oops I haven’t completed this lmao.)
  2. A straight to the point title.
  3. Cohesive set of posts with a minimum of 20 pins.

It’s also good to pin popular and visually appealing pins. It seems like the more popular a pin is, the more people will find it and consequently visit your page. So because of that, I strive to strategically pin high quality or popular pins each time.

You may also need to create a separate board for your blog so all your personal blog pins go there.

Screen Shot 2017-08-18 at 6.39.07 PM

Once you’re pinning other people’s photos, you can inject some of your personal pins into the mix! However, you shouldn’t spam your boards with all your pins. 80% of your pins should be other people’s pins and 20% should be yours. So always try to balance it out.

That is all you need for making you Pinterest profile ready! Once you have a legit looking profile, you will definitely get more visits to your blog.

I sincerely hope this was as helpful as possible. I was once confused starting out on Pinterest so I’m happy to be helping other people navigate this website even though I’m still a baby blogger/Pinterester.

This post is just how to build an optimum Pinterest profile but there is so much more things you can learn about Pinterest too.

In my subsequent posts, I will discuss about making your images pinnable, how to edit them and promote them and pinning strategies to increase your exposure. These tips really increased my engagement and I hope they work for you too.

Thank you so much for reading and give my baby Pinterest account a follow!

My 6 Apps For Better Blogging

I have been blogging for a little over 4 months now and it has really been a lot of fun so far.  Blogging is fun, but it can also be a lot of work. Using apps makes blogging easier and better for me. Without it, I would literally be a hot mess. Here are some of the apps I use on my iPhone and Macbook for better blogging!

WordPress

Duh, WordPress.com has an app! It’s an amazing app because it connects the community of WordPress bloggers together in a single stream. It’s also really easy to use and see all the people you follow. Think of it as Instagram, but for blogs. You can tag your posts, search for blog posts under categories or tags and even follow blogs.

You can also edit your website, write and publish blog posts all within a few swipes of your finger. It has made blogging so much easier because I do not rely on my laptop so much anymore. I can literally blog on the go! Also, a large proportion of my traffic comes from the WordPress Reader and Pinterest so I am very active on this app!

MinimaList

If you love a no-nonsense, simplistic to-do list then this app is perfect for you. Most reminder and to-do list apps are somewhat complicated for me. I wanted an app that I could simply write a task and strike it off when I was done. I use this app to keep track of all my blogging ideas and chores and it’s great for keeping me organized!

Photoscape- X

Unfortunately this app is only available to MacBook users. If you happen to own a MacBook, this app will take your editing game to the next level. I edit all my Instagram photos and blogging photos here and it is really simple to navigate and use! It has filters, collage makers, graphic and even a gif maker. I’m very glad I discovered this app!

Instagram

Instagram is really popular among bloggers because it is a great way to get your blog out there. If your blog relies heavily on visuals then Instagram is the perfect app to use. But having great photos is only half the battle on Instagram right? There is a bit of skill that goes into using the ‘gram that I’m yet to hack completely!

Instagram is one of the first social media sites I joined. I have been on Instagram for 5 years now but I finally started from scratch created a separate Instagram for my blog 3 months ago. I currently have 460 followers and I actually prefer this account to my personal account because there is so much more engagement there!

Followers +

If you use Instagram for blogging, I would suggest you download this app to track who follows and unfollows you. It is helpful because a lot of  people on Instagram follow you just to unfollow you 2-3 days later. This is because they are using bots. With this app, you will know exactly who they are and act accordingly! Speaking of followers, I would also love to do an Instagram blog series once I reach 500 followers there. Would you like to see it?

Pinterest

I started using this app recently but I didnt even know Pinterest was a form of social media till 2 months ago. I didnt know what is was used for and I also didn’t know that it was such a great way for discovering blogs and driving traffic to yours. Ever since I started implementing some simple tips, I have seen a massive increase in Pinterest traffic on my blog. I still haven’t hacked this site yet, but I will definitely share some tips when I am absolutely sure of what works!

Thank you for reading! I hope you enjoyed this post. What apps do you use for blogging?

What One Year Of Blogging Has Taught Me

I recently got a notification from WordPress that I have been blogging for a year now! Technically, I created my blog a year ago but I only started actively blogging 3 months ago. I have experienced a lot of ups and downs during these past 3 months and I think it would be lovely to share what I have learnt about blogging so far. I hope you enjoy!

Blogging is not as easy as it seems

That perfect flatlay and glamorous pictures you see on blogs have probably been taken a 100 times to look just right. Before I started blogging I used to think people just empty the contents of their makeup bag and everything falls beautifully in place. I didn’t understand why mine looked like a hot mess. It takes a lot of effort and hours to plan posts, write it, take pictures and promote it. Blogging can easily turn into a full-time job! You have to be consistent and diligent and always try to improve. It’s not easy, but definitely worth it. So far!

If something isn’t working, don’t be afraid to scrap it

When I first started blogging I couldn’t decide on what niche I wanted to blog about. So I started with many niches like music, movies, books, fashion, makeup, travelling and lifestyle. I started posting and I quickly realised that people did not like reading my independent posts about music, books and movies. So I deleted all those posts and I slowly dwindled down my topics to things that people liked. I listened to my readers and acted accordingly.

I think its okay to not blog about everything. Even if you love everything like me LOL. I think my opinion is more valued in certain areas than others, which is great! It allows my thoughts to be more targeted and my quality to be better. Don’t be afraid to adapt especially when you are starting out because you have we have so much lee way for change now!

highlights.jpg

Shamelessly promote your blog

A lot of people feel shy about sharing their blog posts but it is one of the best ways for people to find your blog. I am not saying that you should be that annoying, spammy blogger, but doing things like sharing your posts once social media and leaving your blog link at the end of comments is a great way to get your blog out there. If you feel uncomfortable about sharing your posts with people you know you can carve out an entirely separate community of strangers to share your posts with. For example, I now have a separate Instagram page where I am striving to grow a community of like-minded people different from followers on my personal page!

blog

Interact with the blogging community

Interacting with other people is so important when you’re a blogger. It’s not enough to just publish posts and sit and wait for something to happen. I make sure to reply to every single person that took the time to comment on my post. Doing this helps build relationships with the people that read your posts! Also, do not be afraid to comment on other people’s posts, share their blog post, like them or follow them on Instagram. When you comment, try to leave thoughtful comments. Simply commenting “Nice” or “Great post” does not count. It shows you didn’t read a word of the persons post. Truly interacting really makes your blogging experience so much better!

This is one of the best tips for growing any social media site; posting often, striving for quality content and interacting with the community!

 Be yourself

I think it’s perfectly okay to derive inspiration from another person because almost everything under the sun has been blogged about. I think what makes a post unique in particular is the fact that it is your unique perspective. That is why it is important to be honest and be yourself. It is so exhausting trying to act like something you are not and I think people can pick up on that. On the flip side, it is so liberating when people embrace unique aspects of your personality that you may think are weird or not good enough. That can be what makes you stand out!

IMG_3845.jpg

I’m definitely still a baby blogger and I have no idea what I am doing 99.999 percent of the time so these are just some of the things I have learnt so far! I also have no idea what I’m going to do when I move into a self hosted site. And what in heavens name is SEO and HTML? This is uncharted territory. LOL wish me luck and fingers crossed that I appear graceful admist the madness!

The 700 Followers Q&A! + Blogging Tips

Last week I hit 700 followers on my blog and I decided to do a Q&A! I am now literally racing against the clock here because I checked my stats this morning and I currently have 790 followers. Gasp! I really wanted to release this blog post before I hit 800 for some strange, slightly OCD reason. Haha

I would like to sincerely thank everyone who sent I questions for this post. There are a wide variety of questions which were interesting to read and answer. I also left the link to each persons blog that asked a question so you can discover some blogs you may like. Enjoy!

Life Of Angela

What three words best describe you?

Calm, Strong-willed and Playful.

What is the longest plane trip you have taken?

The longest plane ride I have ever taken was from Nigeria to Atlanta which took 12 hours. I did not enjoy that flight. In fact, I dislike flying in general. The seats suck, the food is rarely nice and turbulence. Don’t get me started on turbulence. I’m jealous of you unicorns that enjoy Business or First class seats. My parents and little sister always fly Business/First and when we happen to fly on the same flight our experience wildly varies.

Sister: “How was the flight for you?”

Me: “Just there. I didn’t sleep much, my neck is now stiff and the turbulence was so much!”

Sister: “What turbulence? I slept all through, except for when the flight attendant gently roused me from my sleep with the sound of violins to wake me up for my 3 course breakfast.”

Okay I’m kind of exaggerating, but you get my point lool. Although I hate flying, I love travelling to different places. At this point flying is just a necessary evil for me.

Chёrnaja Kuriцa

What app do you use to edit your pictures?

I use this app on my Macbook called PhotoScape X. It is free and has all the features that most people need for blogging. I usually edit all my photos there before transferring it to my phone if I need to post a picture on twitter or Instagram!

QuintessentialFaith

What part of the world are you in and would you like to do blogger collaboration?

I currently live in Nigeria, Africa! I lived in the UK for three years but I am now back to my home country for a gap year.

I would also not mind doing a blogger collaboration. It sounds kind of fun. I  am not entirely sure how it works so I’ll have to get more information on it before I dive in.

Natural Muse

If you could give your younger self any advice what would it be?

It’s okay to be you. I used to have quite the low self esteem as a teenager and I was constantly trying to please people. It becomes truly exhausting when people do not understand you and you cannot truly be yourself without the crippling fear of being judged. It was definitely not easy  to come out of that negative energy and headspace on my own but once I did there was no looking back. Life is a million times better when you adopt a positive mindset and embrace who you are. If I could go back I would tell my younger self that it is okay!

The Obsession Begins

If you could be anyone for one day, who would you be?

I have no specific people in mind but I’ve always wanted to swap places with a super rich and or famous person. They live glamorous lives and it would be interesting to experience it!

Elsie LMC

How do you feel looking back on your first ever blog post and seeing how far you’ve come?

It is pretty surreal looking at my first post ever. I literally had no idea what I was doing. My first post ever was on June 13 2016. I wrote about my interests at the time and introduced myself to the Blogosphere! I was still doing Youtube at the time and I decided to add blogging to the mix. However, I am not active on Youtube anymore (Do you guys think I should continue? I have mixed feelings about it) I also had no concrete idea of what I wanted to blog about but I knew it was something I wanted to do.

Wormal Blog

What’s your favorite 2017 trend so far?

I’m really liking this embroidered flower print fashion trend thats going on right now. I think it takes any basic outfit and makes it look glamorous. One of my favourite looks I wore recently was this cute embroidered white button up top from Zara with my embroidered Gucci Dionysus bag!

IMG_5036

What is your dream car?

I’m not really a car person but I really like the look of a Mercedes, Bentley or a Rolls Royce!

What was your first date like?

It was horrid. Lol

WeAreJaded

How often do you post and would you have any tips in terms of what’s worked for you?

I used to post every Monday but I have recently increased the frequency of my posts to twice a week! I am now trying to post every Monday and Friday because that seems to be when I have the most traffic on my blog!

Glaiza Binayas

What do you think is the best strategy that worked well for you to get more traffic to your blog?

One of the best strategies that has worked for getting more traffic on my blog is to actually interact with other blogs I like. I love how WordPress.com makes it so easy to follow and find other blogs. I have the WordPress app on my iPhone and I go through it and read people blog posts. If I particularly enjoyed reading it, I would like or comment on the post. Showing support to other blogs is a great way to build a positive relationship with other bloggers and also get your blog out there!

I am still learning as I go along and maybe there is an even better strategy but this is what has been working for me so far.

That is it for my Q&A! I know this was a pretty long post but I have been getting into the habit of writing long posts recently. I think it shows my increasing investment in this blog. Please follow me on my Instagram and Twitter account for my blog ❤
