How I Achieved My Health Goals

It’s July and we are waaay past the middle of the year now. 2017 has been a pretty good year for me so far. I got to take the trip of a lifetime to Dubai, I got admitted to McGill University for my M.Sc. and I surpassed 500 followers on this blog by a long shot. I am definitely looking forward to what the rest of this year will bring offline and online!

I think almost everyone has some sort health goal that they want to achieve. Be it removing negativity, exercising more, eating healthier or meditating more. There are so many ways you can decide to improve your health and well-being.

In the beginning of the year, I had two health resolutions that I vowed to follow come new year. These were exercising regularly and losing weight. Here is how I achieved those goals!

Exercise

I wanted to establish a regular exercise regimen because I was completely sedentary. I had exercised on and off for months but it was erratic and I would often stop for extended periods of time. I had begun to take my health more seriously and I realised that my inactivity was something that had to change. I decided that I would find an exercise I don’t hate doing and start doing that consistently for the next few months

Was I successful?

I have gone from zero exercise a week to 3 times a week. I now do a variety of strength training and cardio exercise through the course of a week. I started very small. Exercising only once a week and doing low-impact exercises. Once I felt comfortable I slowly increased the frequency and intensity of my exercises to where I am today.

I am by no means a fitness expert. I still look like a headless chicken when I exercise and some days I really, really don’t want to do it but I have noticed so much improvements since I started. My arms and bum look more defined, my resting heart rate has reduced and I can now do a couple of push ups (knee assisted). I was that girl who couldn’t muster up even one assisted push up so this was a very big deal for me!

What exercises did I do?

I used Fitness Blender videos on YouTube. Fitness Blender was founded by a couple called Dan and Kelli who make free exercise videos for all levels and ages. They have over 500 videos on their channel so there is always something for you.

The exercise intensity ranges from 1-5. I started initially at a level 1 and 2 but I am currently doing level 2 to 4. Level 5 is pretty extreme for me so I don’t see myself doing that anytime soon.

Losing Weight

My second goal was to lose weight. Which is the probably most basic goal ever lol. I have been overweight for the majority of my life. It’s not the most noticeable thing in the world because I carry my weight pretty well and I have never had any health issues. (Seriously, the last time I was sick was in elementary school). However, my weight had been a source of a most of my self-esteem issues when I was a teenager! As I got older, I became more at peace with my body and began to like it. But as I became more health conscious, I decided to reach a normal weight because I wanted to be healthier after it finally sunk in my head that I was increasing my risk of developing chronic diseases if I do not lose weight!

I was about 10 kg or 20 pounds overweight. So I had a lot of weight to lose before I reached the upper limit of a healthy weight.

Was I successful?

I have lost 11 pounds or 5 kg so far! I am now 10 pounds away from a normal BMI and this is a very peculiar experience for me. I have lost weight by counting my calories and incorporating healthier/filling meals into my diet. The calorie counting app I use is myFitnessPal and it has a large database of food so it is easy to check any food I eat and track it. I weigh every single thing I eat (including condiments) using a scale and weigh myself daily to get a weekly average of my weight. My weight fluctuates a lot daily so it is important to me to get an average so I do not get hung up on a single number I see on the scale!

The biggest difficulty I’ve experienced is adapting to a reduced calorie diet since I was used to eating 2000+ daily. Going from 1800-2000 calories a day to 1300-1500 did not go well for a few weeks. I realised that I had to get creative with the type of food I eat if I was going to survive.

I have incorporated complex carbohydrates like sweet potatoes and oatmeal, increased my vegetable intake and incorporated better fats like peanut butter and cashews. Nearly don’t eat enough protein so that is something I need to work on. Although my diet is not perfect, it is improving and that is all I am aiming for right now. Perfect is the enemy of good!

However, I am currently struggling because my mother keeps buying snacks in the house. Someone send help. Please. Lol

Weight loss communities have also kept me motivated when I felt myself slipping. The r/loseit community of Reddit has helped tremendously with this. I’m an avid Redditor and lurker so finding this community was amazing. I can not begin to explain how motivating the community has been to me. They are an amazing bunch of people!

I hope I can continue losing weight and getting healthier for the remainder of the year. It hasn’t been always the easiest thing to stop bad habits, but it is well worth it!

The 1000 Followers Milestone!

Excuse me? OMG, me? What? A thousand people are following my blog?

I had a goal to reach 500 followers by the end of the year and this has completely exceeded my expectations!

I would like to sincerely thank you all for subscribing to my blog, continuously interacting with me and showing support. It is this continuous support that keeps me going! I don’t look at you all my people who are following me, I see you as a community of my friends.

This is such an amazing milestone to reach and it now feels weird looking at my follower count because I remember when I had 20 people following me. That was such an exciting time for me and now that I have reached 1000 followers, this is a similar, exhilarating feeling!

So what’s next? I can’t wait to see where this blogging journey takes me and see how I evolve as I continue doing this. I’m looking forward to working with different brands and websites! I currently live in Nigeria so getting some opportunities have been a bit of a challenge. However, I may be moving soon so that would definitely open more opportunities for me! Yay!

I also set a goal for myself that if I ever hit a 1000 followers on my blog I would get a custom domain. I would love more creative freedom on my blog but I don’t know if I should pay for WordPress Premium or move to WordPress.org yet. I’ll probably start with the paid versions of WordPress.com before I move to a self hosted website. I’m too lazy for all the technical stuff and I really love the ease of the community here.

I also started a new Instagram page for my blog a month ago. Despite the messy algorithm, I currently have 360 lovely followers there so it is going pretty well all things considered. So go over there and give me a follow!

Also trying to get into Pinterest too, I don’t know how to use that much so we’ll see how this goes!

What One Year Of Blogging Has Taught Me

I recently got a notification from WordPress that I have been blogging for a year now! Technically, I created my blog a year ago but I only started actively blogging 3 months ago. I have experienced a lot of ups and downs during these past 3 months and I think it would be lovely to share what I have learnt about blogging so far. I hope you enjoy!

Blogging is not as easy as it seems

That perfect flatlay and glamorous pictures you see on blogs have probably been taken a 100 times to look just right. Before I started blogging I used to think people just empty the contents of their makeup bag and everything falls beautifully in place. I didn’t understand why mine looked like a hot mess. It takes a lot of effort and hours to plan posts, write it, take pictures and promote it. Blogging can easily turn into a full-time job! You have to be consistent and diligent and always try to improve. It’s not easy, but definitely worth it. So far!

If something isn’t working, don’t be afraid to scrap it

When I first started blogging I couldn’t decide on what niche I wanted to blog about. So I started with many niches like music, movies, books, fashion, makeup, travelling and lifestyle. I started posting and I quickly realised that people did not like reading my independent posts about music, books and movies. So I deleted all those posts and I slowly dwindled down my topics to things that people liked. I listened to my readers and acted accordingly.

I think its okay to not blog about everything. Even if you love everything like me LOL. I think my opinion is more valued in certain areas than others, which is great! It allows my thoughts to be more targeted and my quality to be better. Don’t be afraid to adapt especially when you are starting out because you have we have so much lee way for change now!

Shamelessly promote your blog

A lot of people feel shy about sharing their blog posts but it is one of the best ways for people to find your blog. I am not saying that you should be that annoying, spammy blogger, but doing things like sharing your posts once social media and leaving your blog link at the end of comments is a great way to get your blog out there. If you feel uncomfortable about sharing your posts with people you know you can carve out an entirely separate community of strangers to share your posts with. For example, I now have a separate Instagram page where I am striving to grow a community of like-minded people different from followers on my personal page!

Interact with the blogging community

Interacting with other people is so important when you’re a blogger. It’s not enough to just publish posts and sit and wait for something to happen. I make sure to reply to every single person that took the time to comment on my post. Doing this helps build relationships with the people that read your posts! Also, do not be afraid to comment on other people’s posts, share their blog post, like them or follow them on Instagram. When you comment, try to leave thoughtful comments. Simply commenting “Nice” or “Great post” does not count. It shows you didn’t read a word of the persons post. Truly interacting really makes your blogging experience so much better!

This is one of the best tips for growing any social media site; posting often, striving for quality content and interacting with the community!

 Be yourself

I think it’s perfectly okay to derive inspiration from another person because almost everything under the sun has been blogged about. I think what makes a post unique in particular is the fact that it is your unique perspective. That is why it is important to be honest and be yourself. It is so exhausting trying to act like something you are not and I think people can pick up on that. On the flip side, it is so liberating when people embrace unique aspects of your personality that you may think are weird or not good enough. That can be what makes you stand out!

I’m definitely still a baby blogger and I have no idea what I am doing 99.999 percent of the time so these are just some of the things I have learnt so far! I also have no idea what I’m going to do when I move into a self hosted site. And what in heavens name is SEO and HTML? This is uncharted territory. LOL wish me luck and fingers crossed that I appear graceful admist the madness!

The 700 Followers Q&A! + Blogging Tips

Last week I hit 700 followers on my blog and I decided to do a Q&A! I am now literally racing against the clock here because I checked my stats this morning and I currently have 790 followers. Gasp! I really wanted to release this blog post before I hit 800 for some strange, slightly OCD reason. Haha

What three words best describe you? 

Calm, Strong-willed and Playful.

What is the longest plane trip you have taken? 

The longest plane ride I have ever taken was from Nigeria to Atlanta which took 12 hours. I did not enjoy that flight. In fact, I dislike flying in general. The seats suck, the food is rarely nice and turbulence. Don’t get me started on turbulence. I’m jealous of you unicorns that enjoy Business or First class seats. My parents and little sister always fly Business/First and when we happen to fly on the same flight our experience wildly varies.

Sister: “How was the flight for you?”

Me: “Just there. I didn’t sleep much, my neck is now stiff and the turbulence was so much!”

Sister: “What turbulence? I slept all through, except for when the flight attendant gently roused me from my sleep with the sound of violins to wake me up for my 3 course breakfast.”

Okay I’m kind of exaggerating, but you get my point lool. Although I hate flying, I love travelling to different places. At this point flying is just a necessary evil for me.

What app do you use to edit your pictures? 

I use this app on my Macbook called PhotoScape X. It is free and has all the features that most people need for blogging. I usually edit all my photos there before transferring it to my phone if I need to post a picture on twitter or Instagram!

I currently live in Nigeria, Africa! I lived in the UK for three years but I am now back to my home country for a gap year.

I would also not mind doing a blogger collaboration. It sounds kind of fun. I  am not entirely sure how it works so I’ll have to get more information on it before I dive in.

If you could give your younger self any advice what would it be?

It’s okay to be you. I used to have quite the low self esteem as a teenager and I was constantly trying to please people. It becomes truly exhausting when people do not understand you and you cannot truly be yourself without the crippling fear of being judged. It was definitely not easy  to come out of that negative energy and headspace on my own but once I did there was no looking back. Life is a million times better when you adopt a positive mindset and embrace who you are. If I could go back I would tell my younger self that it is okay!

If you could be anyone for one day, who would you be?

I have no specific people in mind but I’ve always wanted to swap places with a super rich and or famous person. They live glamorous lives and it would be interesting to experience it!

How do you feel looking back on your first ever blog post and seeing how far you’ve come? 

It is pretty surreal looking at my first post ever. I literally had no idea what I was doing. My first post ever was on June 13 2016. I wrote about my interests at the time and introduced myself to the Blogosphere! I was still doing Youtube at the time and I decided to add blogging to the mix. However, I am not active on Youtube anymore (Do you guys think I should continue? I have mixed feelings about it) I also had no concrete idea of what I wanted to blog about but I knew it was something I wanted to do.

How often do you post and would you have any tips in terms of what’s worked for you?

I used to post every Monday but I have recently increased the frequency of my posts to twice a week! I am now trying to post every Monday and Friday because that seems to be when I have the most traffic on my blog!

One of the best strategies that has worked for getting more traffic on my blog is to actually interact with other blogs I like. I love how WordPress.com makes it so easy to follow and find other blogs. I have the WordPress app on my iPhone and I go through it and read people blog posts. If I particularly enjoyed reading it, I would like or comment on the post. Showing support to other blogs is a great way to build a positive relationship with other bloggers and also get your blog out there!

I am still learning as I go along and maybe there is an even better strategy but this is what has been working for me so far.

The Mid Year Favourites Roundup: Books, Music, Movies and Makeup!

We are officially in the middle of the year! 2017 has gone by so quickly and I can’t believe we are already here now. I feel like 2017 is this strange, transitional period that does not deserve to be a year. I have this strange thing about certain years, especially odd numbers. 2015 was one of those years.

I am doing something slightly different from the normal posts on my blog. I think it’s always good to branch out and try different things because you never know how it may be received. I love reading monthly favourites because it gives me a glimpse into people’s lives and what they’ve been into that month. I discover a lot of makeup brands, TV shows and even music that I want to try. So todays favourites will include other things I am interested in besides makeup! Enjoy!

The Life Changing Magic Of Tidying Up

I read this book earlier this year and it really was life changing! I was a hopelessly messy person filled with clutter and shame but after a few months I can officially say that I am a tidy person with no more clutter in my life anymore. I love how the book doesn’t only tackle your clutter but it shows you how to prevent it from ever happening again. I really love my new clutter free self. It is an amazing book and definitely worth a read! I wrote an extended post about it here

What if you could go back in time, but only for half of a second?

I am obsessed with the concept of time travel. I just find the scientific concepts surrounding time travel so intriguing. I always love to sit and imagine if time travel were possible. I also like to imagine the implications and paradoxes that we would encounter if it exists!

I read this book by Douglas E. Richards which addressed all my time travel questions. Half a second seems like an inconsequential amount of time but this book will clearly prove otherwise!

Maybelline Fit Me Foundation


I haven’t said this on my blog yet but Maybelline is the best foundation I have ever used. It glides on like silk on your skin and gives a finishing that no foundation has yet to match. That is a hefty statement coming from me. The only con about Maybelline is that it does not last long! However, I always use a bullet proof setting powder so I have no issues with it. It is also extremely affordable. It is currently my daily foundation and Lancôme is my “event” foundation.

Dior Addict Lipgloss in “Angelique”


I have gone back to an “effortless” makeup style recently. I have been enjoying lip glosses A LOT recently and the Dior Addict lipstick has definitely been one of my favourite glosses! I did an extended review here.

TV & MOVIES

Interstellar

I re-watched one of my favourite movies of all time and I was not disappointed! Interstellar is a movie about interstellar travel through space and time in an effort to help the dying human race find a new home. It’s beautifully written, directed and the film score is one of the best I have ever listened to in a movie. It’s the kind of movie that you will think about several days after it’s over because it’s SO good.

Bates Motel

This series is so low-key but so good. I don’t why it’s not popular! It is based on the 50’s novel “American Psycho” which shows how the complicated relationship between Norman Bates and his mother turns him from a loving, loyal son into a serial killer with dissociative identity disorder. They just finished the final season so now you can binge watch away!

Donald Trumps Presidency (As seen on CNN, aka fake news lmao )

They say truth is stranger than fiction and I completely agree. I watch House Of Cards and I can officially say that what’s happening on TV is more outrageous than the show. I think Donald Trump’s Presidency is playing like a movie and its interesting to watch how his administration is imploding from within. From the battle with “Fake news” to the ongoing Russia investigation to cofveve, this presidency has been nothing short of strange and entertaining. Just when you think it can’t get worse, a new bomb shell drops and turns everything on its head. I will definitely be keeping up with Donald Trump in 2017.

 700 Followers Milestone! Blogging Goals and Q&A

I now have 700 followers on The Pearly Life!!!  I would like to thank every single one of you that followed and showed support on my posts. I honestly didn’t think I would be at this point at all when I started blogging. It’s an amazing and surreal experience. Angela said something about getting followers so quickly in her recent post which I thought was so true.

I feel excited, but also freaked out at the same time. It is a strange feeling to get a large influx of  followers and sometimes you do not even believe it is happening to you. I feel like I may just blink and it would be over!

Blogging Goals

My blog stats tremendously improved in the month of May. I started my blog on June 2016  then abandoned it a month later. It was March 2017 that I started to take my blogging more seriously. My stats, views, likes, followers and engagement have in turn increased each month and I hope I can continue in this upward trajectory!

I would like to begin branch out on the type of posts I make. My blog is seriously lacking in the Lifestyle category so I would love to increase the frequency of those posts. I personally love a bit of diversity so I would love to blog about different topics on my blog. What would you guys like to see? I would love to hear your opinion on it!

I also see myself moving into a self hosted blogging platform like WordPress.org soon. I like WordPress.com but there is a serious lack of creative freedom when it comes to the design of your blog, SEO tools, widgets and many more. It has become more frustrating so I will begin to seriously look into moving in the coming months!

I also would love to increase my social media presence now so I am currently focusing on Instagram and Twitter. I don’t know what I’m doing yet but once I figure it out I will make a post helping my fellow bloggers here! ❤

My Travel Bag Essentials: Dubai Edition 

I am travelling to Dubai! It’s my first time going to the UAE and I am very excited. Whenever I see Dubai on TV it looks absolutely beautiful. I am travelling with my mother and I am very happy I finally get to see it in person. I plan to do all the basic tourist stuff like visiting the Burj Khalifa and having a desert safari ride. One thing I am really looking forward to do is riding a camel in the desert. It is such a unique experience that I’m sure I will always remember.

This will be an extensive post where I will cover my clothing, makeup and gadgets that I must have on this trip so grab some tea and enjoy!

Clothes

In true tourist fashion I will mostly be wearing shirts and jeans. The main theme is a short-sleeved blouse, jeans and gladiator sandals. This outfit is pretty light and will be able to keep me cool in the hot Dubai weather. I also plan to carry a pashmina, to adhere to the Dubai dress code incase I am in a place where I need to dress more modestly.

Makeup

My essential makeup items include lipstick, powder and eye makeup.  I already live in a very hot temperate climate (Nigeria) so I will easily adapt my makeup style to the Dubai weather.

Mac’s Ruby Woo and Taupe – My essential lipsticks include a nude lipstick for casual looks and a red lipstick if I feel dressy. I am carrying my absolute favorite lipsticks from Mac’s which are Ruby Woo and Taupe. These are my go to lipsticks that look good on any outfit or color.

Mac’s Mineralized Skin Finish Powder – Although I’m going to be wearing foundation, in hotter weathers it is good practice to carry a blotting powder for when you get sweaty and need to touch up your face. Mac’s Mineralized Skin Finish is perfect for this job!

Sleeks Mascara and Jordana’s Fabubrow pencil  – My essential eye makeup includes my eyebrow kit and my mascara! I am carrying my L.A Girl Pro concelear in Chesnut and my Jordana’s Fabubrow eyebrow pencil in Midnight brown. I am also using Sleeks Mascara.

Gadgets

Canon 600D and Canon PowerShot SX700HS :-  I will be using these camera’s to shoot beautiful tourist-y pictures! I love my compact digital camera (Powershot) for a quick on the go picture but the DSLR (600D) will give you the perfect shot. Unfortunately the 600D has been discontinued but you can get the Canon PowerShot SX700HS on Amazon.

iPhone 6 and 5 :- I will be using my trusty iPhones to edit photos, post pictures on Instagram, Snapchat and listen to music! My favourite travel apps include

  • Uber – Whenever I need a Taxi I usually call an Uber but I will most likely be using Careem because I read that it is used more often in Dubai.
  • Trip Advisor – Gives reviews and tips on the best sights to see what to do when you’re in a destination.
  • Spotify – I love listening to my favorite music on the go. I utilize the offline features a lot when I’m traveling because I may not have access to Wifi in some places.

Kindle :- Possibly one of my favorite gadgets and best £100 I ever spent, I can download a massive amount of books which will keep me company in long plane and car rides.  It’s such a great investment if you’re an avid reader of books. It is currently £89 and you can find it here. I am currently reading “The Shack” by William P. Young and it is so good!

The Art Of Decluttering

I find it ironic that I had a closet filled with clothes but nothing to wear, or a makeup counter bursting with products but I found myself using the same lipstick and wearing the same clothes everyday. I was also surrounded by a room that was beginning to turn into an episode of Hoarders (which is a really interesting show by the way). I was overwhelmed with items around me that really didn’t make me happy.

I had been away from my family home for 3 years and now that I was back, I was confronted with the clutter that had accumulated over the years. Books and clothes that hadn’t been read or worn in years were stacked in every corner. It was so much that I didn’t have space to keep the things I actually use. It was truly suffocating.

I came across a great book by Marie Kondo called “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying” which has really changed my perception of items I keep around me.

Most people are a “I’ll use it one day” or “just incase”  type of hoarder. This mentality makes me keep things that I really don’t need or like when it comes to clothing, books and makeup. I often felt guilty about throwing things away but I felt even more guilty for being surrounded by so much clutter.

After reading Marie Kondo’s book, the single most important thing I have learnt is recalibrating the relationship I have with the items I own. Now I sit and consider if an item I own “sparks joy” in me. Do I feel good, fulfilled and happy using this item? This is how I understand the statement that is used extensively in the book. If it doesn’t, it is better to let it go.

I’ve discovered that I do not need to feel guilty for giving away things that are in perfectly good condition, things I may use one day (which hardly ever comes) and just incase items. We often feel we are protecting the items we own by keeping them close to us but in reality it is the opposite. These items are sitting in a corner collecting dust, often forgotten, not being used. Marie Kondo says “If our items could speak, would they be happy?” I don’t think so.

Letting go of these items gives them, in essence, a new life where they may be cherished and used by someone else. I’ve realised that each item plays a special role in our life; that purple lipstick you never used? It taught you what lipstick colours worked for you and what didn’t. It is time to thank it for fulfilling its purpose in your life and let it go. Those books you read halfway last year and have been meaning to complete? It’s time to thank it for entertaining you briefly and let it go.

This change in my mentality has led me to remove  an estimated three 50 gallon trash bags of things that do not “spark joy” in my room.

I have also learnt how to fold clothes properly. I usually stacked my clothes on top of each other when I folded them, which is a recipe for clutter, mess and crinkled clothes. Now I fold my clothes the Marie Kondo way; vertically and colour co-ordinate. This has helped my organisation and reduced the stress of figuring out what to wear since all my clothes can be seen at a glance.

Sadly, I didn’t take any pictures of my room before I started decluttering. I didn’t realize I would probably want to blog about the process.

However, just to give you an idea of how cluttered things could get, here was a picture of one of the most cluttered tables in my house:

I feel like a minimalist princess. I don’t know who I am anymore. Thank you Marie Kondo. Seriously, get this book.

Now that I have somewhat handled my clutter problem, I am now interested in tackling my style problem. I don’t have access to the clothing I want to buy so I have to wait till September till I can buy a whole new closet. Through decluttering I discovered that I hate ALL my clothes and I don’t really have a personal style. I am now in a long process of discovering  my personal style and aesthetic. I am currently loving a classic, sharp smart wadrobe with lots of white and pops of red and mustard.
